How could so many beautiful Ukrainian songs been inspired by as common a bird as a pigeon? Why is it that in the oldest and the newest Ukrainian love songs we hear the words "holub" and "holubka"? Maybe, because as you travel through Saskatchewan, you see the flat prairies, skyline dotted with tall grain elevators. And around each one of them are thousands of pigeons. Maybe because there's a lakehead in Ontario, there are millions of them. And maybe because they live also in Old Ukraine. And maybe because you see them in farmers' yards. Ukrainian farmers' yards. The true sons of the soil, born here in Canada. Still the people who fill most of those elevators with the bread that feeds our world. Maybe. I think so. | How could so many beautiful Ukrainian songs been inspired by as common a bird as a pigeon?
