This song is often credited to Євген Садовський. Marko Farion, who knew Садовський, insists that Садовський likely did not compose it as (1) Farion's mother recalled hearing this song in the Писаний Камінь region prior to WWII and (2) Садовський never composed anything else. However, the claim that Садовський never composed anything else is contradicted by a 1967 Congressional Record (page 34306) that he wrote a song called "My Ukraine" as well as a 2010 museum archive referring to him as a "legendary composer".
Садовський's own book "Українські Пісні (1990)" gives the following credits for this song on page 97:

While that might seem to put the melody's authorship to rest, unfortunately Sadowsky regularly credited himself as the music's author for musical arrangements, not just original compositions. For example, he credits the music to "Свята Ніч" (page 108) to himself as well, when that was very clearly not composed by him, but rather Franz Xaver Gruber.
